Beeters and Mustangs Set to Kick Off 2014 Season
CHINOOK, Mont. (NMB) - The Chinook Sugarbeeters football team kicks off their 2014 campaign hosting the Great Falls Central Catholic Mustangs Saturday.

There were plenty of changes in the offseason for the Beeters, including a new Head Coach Scott Friede, who previously coached the team from 1994-99 when they were an 11-man Class B team.

Friede says the Beeters have good size on the offensive line, and three or four running back he thinks will be consistent, so Friede hopes to see a strong running game this year.

The Beeters and Mustangs kick off at 7:30 PM Saturday, you can hear the game on 101.3 FM KRYK, and online at KRYK.com.

Blue Ponies Try to Win Back BNSF Trophy Saturday
HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) - The Havre Blue Ponies football team will open their season this Saturday competing for the BNSF Traveling Trophy against the Whitefish Bulldogs.

Havre's Blue-White Scrimmage usually serves as a nice tuneup ahead of the season opener, but this year's scrimmage was cancelled due to inclement weather. Blue Ponies Head Coach Jason Christensen says that only adds to the anticipation of game against Whitefish.

The Northwestern A Bulldogs have won two in a row against the Blue Ponies, including a 45-27 victory last year, Christensen says not much has changed, and Whitefish will again be a tough opponent.

The Blue Ponies and Bulldogs kickoff at 2 PM Saturday. You can hear the game on 610 AM KOJM, and online at KOJM.com.

Fort Benton to Play JV Football Schedule
GREAT FALLS, Mont. (AP) - The Montana High School Association denied Fort Benton's request for an emergency football co-op with Great Falls Central Catholic.

MHSA executive director Mark Beckman said Thursday the request wasn't made by the Feb. 1 deadline and the combined enrollment of the two schools - 191 students - far exceeded the Class C co-op cap of 131 students.

Fort Benton athletic director Bob Schoonover told the Great Falls Tribune he school will play a junior varsity schedule after their running back suffered a season-ending knee injury, two players were declared academically ineligible and another left the team.

Beckman said the MHSA would let Fort Benton schedule JV games with Class B and 6-Man competition if they wanted to play more games.

Fort Benton will play the Cascade JV on Tuesday.

Lights and Orediggers Face Off Saturday
HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) - The MSU-Northern Lights football team opens their season on the road Saturday facing the Montana Tech Orediggers in Butte.

For the Lights under the direction of Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator Jake Eldridge, the key to winning against the Orediggers is his teams alignment against the opponent.

Eldridge says the Lights have been spirited and energetic in practice this week as his team highly anticipates their first game of the season.

The Lights and Orediggers kick off Saturday at 6 PM. You can hear it on the voice of Northern Sports QX 92.5 FM, and online at KPQX.com.

Tennessee Titans cut Marc Mariani
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The Tennessee Titans cut wide receiver and former pro bowl return man Marc Mariani.

Mariani texted The Tennessean Friday morning saying he hopes he'll land with another team soon.

He said he's healthy for the first time in three years, and is thankful for that.

The native of Havre, Montana, and former Montana Grizzly was drafted by the Titans in the seventh round in 2010 and made the Pro Bowl as a rookie. He missed the 2012 season after suffering a compound fracture of his lower leg during the preseason and missed the 2013 season with a shoulder injury.

Mariani completed the 2014 preseason with six catches for 53 yards. He also returned six kicks for 152 yards and one punt for three yards.

Blue Pony VB Gets Ready to Kick off Season
HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) - The Havre Blue Pony volleyball team will open their regular season up next Friday with games against Livingston and Belgrade.

Although Havre has already gone through pre-season practices and an intersquad scrimmage, Ponies Head Coach Melanie Skoyen says those first regular season matches will really show where the teams' at in the conference

Looking at the rest of the Central A Conference Skoyen says Belgrade and Lewistown, the teams who represented the Central A at State last year, will again be tough this year. Skoyen says both those teams have a lot of size, but Havre can beat them with smart play and improved ball control

Havre plays Livingston and Belgrade next Friday in Belgrade, and then participates in the Windy City Classic in Livingston next Saturday.
